Laser or plasma? Compare cutting processes for your work
The better cutting process depends on the part and the production requirements. A thickness chart or power rating cannot describe the entire workflow. Compare the same part, acceptance criteria and production quantity to obtain a useful basis for a decision.

Define material and quality requirements
List the material, thickness range and required edge quality. Plasma is used to cut electrically conductive metals. For either process, actual capability and results depend on the system. Define acceptance criteria for dross, dimensional tolerance and subsequent operations before comparing cutting speed alone.
Evaluate a representative part through the workflow
Choose a part that represents your production. Record loading, setup, piercing, separation and any finishing operations, as well as cutting time. Compare processing times using samples that meet the same quality requirements. Record the machine and cutting settings used as well.

Plan the consumables alongside the process
Laser consumable groups include nozzles, ceramics and protective windows; plasma systems use electrodes, nozzles and other torch-dependent components. Not every machine has the same set. Build the list from the system manual. When assessing cost per part, consider consumable usage, processing time and any required finishing operations together.
Request a sample cut before deciding
Ask the equipment supplier to cut a sample using the material and thickness from your production. Check its dimensions, edge quality and dross against your acceptance criteria. Evaluate the processing time alongside these results. This gives you a decision based on your own part rather than a general comparison graphic.
