Laser protective window care: what to check
Contamination and surface damage on a protective window require different assessment. The care method must suit the optical specification and coating. Follow the relevant manufacturer’s instructions when choosing cleaning materials and the application method.

Identify the optical component
A protective window and a focusing lens are different components. State exactly which part is being inspected in your maintenance record. Matching the diameter and thickness alone is insufficient; the required optical specification must also match. Do not replace an unidentified component with a similar-looking piece of glass.
Choose materials using the manual
Prepare a clean, organised workspace. Follow the machine or optic manufacturer’s instructions for tissue, swabs, gloves and cleaner. The presence of isopropyl alcohol or cleaning tissue in a catalogue does not establish suitability for every coating. Use the care instructions for the specific optic to determine the cleaner and application method.

Separate contamination from damage
Authorised maintenance staff should determine whether a mark is removable contamination, a scratch or coating damage. Cleaning does not restore a damaged optic. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for unusual marks, cracks or machine warnings. For cracks, coating damage or machine warnings, follow the manufacturer’s inspection and replacement procedure before resuming operation.
Keep maintenance and stock records together
Record the part code, inspection date, observed condition and approved maintenance kit used. This provides a more useful reference for reordering than a photograph alone. Include the head model and existing window code in your enquiry. Ask for confirmation of optical specifications not shown in the published product table.
